The UK has gone up from 10th place to 7th place out of 144 countries in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) network readiness index which is a global ranking of countries benefitting most from ICT and claims to be an accurate assessment of the effect of ICT on a nation’s competitiveness and well-being.

The WEF has said that the UK offers one of the most “conducive political and regulatory environments” for ICT development with significant ICT take-up in the home, business and government.

According to Beñat Bilbao, senior economist at the WEF: “ICT is important for a service-based economy like the UK, and country has made ICT a strategic priority.”

The report said that investment in broadband is a key factor in driving economic growth. The Broadband UK scheme aims to offer all premises in the country access to minimum 2Mbps speed by 2015.

The top three positions were taken by Finland, Singapore and Sweden.
