Govt launches Digital Deal to improve online skills of social housing tenants

As part of a drive to help people prepare for Universal Credit, the new benefits claim system that will be almost entirely online – the government has launched ‘Digital Deal’ – a cross-government GBP 400,000 fund to help social housing tenants improve their online skills.

The scheme, which is expected to fund up to 10 projects across the country, has been funded by the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Communities and Local Government and the grant will be matched by social landlords, which will bring the total amount to GBP 800,000.

Landlords who want to bid for the funding to set up projects for their tenants have until 3rd June to apply via the Digital Housing Hub. .

According to Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform: “Many tenants in social housing don’t have access to the internet. So we are launching Digital Deal to support those who want to get online so they can access the opportunities the internet opens up – for example to help search and apply for jobs, find out about community services and to manage their benefits online.”

Universal Credit will be trialled from April onwards and a national rollout is expected in October.
