As part of an ongoing process to streamline IT decision-making across central government, Stephen Kelly, the government’s COO, is scrapping the role of government CIO. Andy Nelson currently holds the post on an interim basis, and is also CIO at the Department for Work and Pensions.

In addition, Mike Bracken, executive director of the Government Digital Service, will review IT governance structures as the current system is deemed to be too bureaucratic. This hinders senior staff and prevents CIO’s making efficient decisions.

Bracken said: “Some of the [governance] boards add value and some of them don’t. We want to move quickly but the structures are too slow. The governance structure is actually stopping things from going forward.”
