Whitehall and councils must work together for digital by default: LGA
“By working together we can create a joined up package of digital programmes”

The Local Government Association (LGA) recently held its first digital summit where it said that Whitehall and the Government Digital Service need to work more closely with local authorities to realise the government’s ‘digital by default’ agenda.

It said that “Whitehall needs to work more closely with councils to tap into their unrivalled knowledge and links with their communities to create a service that will work for a variety of different customers in a range of different circumstances.”

Many councils have implemented digital services that allow citizens to register to vote or report problems in their areas but the LGA said that “councils are often responsible for delivering government commissioned services such as the issuing of Blue Badges for disabled drivers on behalf of the Department for Transport or providing support for those made redundant for the Department for Work and Pensions.”

According to Cllr Peter Fleming, chair of the Local Government Association¹s Improvement and Innovation Board, “By working together we can create a joined up package of digital programmes that can help the public sector save money, work more efficiently and make people¹s lives easier.”
