DWP sets out framework for helping benefit claimants get online
78% of claimants use the internet

A document has been released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Local Government Association, entitled ‘Universal Credit: Local Support Services Framework’, which lays out plans to provide online support for benefit claimants who do not have internet access or lack the online skills and confidence.

According to the report, 78% of claimants use the internet but only 14% have put in a new claim for benefit online.

According to the report the DWP and its partners need to ensure, amongst other things, that “claimants are helped and encouraged to choose the online channel… and to gain access to computers and broadband where they do not have a private connection at home.”

A DWP spokeswoman added that “some local authorities are already putting PCs into community centres and making more computers available so local residents can get help.”
