“The future is digital”

The government’s chief technology officer Liam Maxwell talks in a recent interview about what the government is doing to help local councils become ‘digital by default’ and about his task to publish a manual mid-February about technology in the new digital world.

The future is digital and it is no longer about big ICT programmes run by the oligopolies of large organisations”, said Maxwell, who will be reporting to both COO Stephen Kelly as well as Mike Bracken, digital leader of Government Digital Service.

He says the government wants to help organisations find “what is innovative in their space and help them make the best use of that.”

He emphasised the importance of open standards and said that “we are here to create the expertise in the centre which allows people to do things better in their own organisations.”
