Glasgow is set to become one of the UK’s first smart cities, after it was awarded a GBP 24 million government grant to show how a future city could work. This will include real-time information about traffic, as well as apps for travel and potholes and waste reporting. Cities are beginning to realise the benefits of smart working, joined services and collecting data, and firms including IBM, Siemens and Cisco are responding with services to streamline traffic management etc.

The grant was provided by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) who awarded Glasgow with the Future Cities Demonstrator prize.

According to Scott Cain, the TSB’s project leader for Future Cities: “Glasgow has some quite extreme challenges – it has the lowest life expectancy of any city in the UK for instance – and the hope is that if we bring together energy, transport, public safety and health it will make it more efficient and a better place to live. All data collected in the project will be available so that other cities can see it.”
