“One modern, fit for purpose system”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) wants to introduce a single computer system for all 40 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) funding schemes by 2015, to make the application process easier for farmers.

The new integrated online system is one of the first programmes coming out as part of the government’s new digital strategy. Through it, applications will only have to enter their details once online rather than do so for each scheme separately.

According to farming minister David Heath, “Having one modern, fit for purpose system will make it far quicker and easier for farmers to apply for funding and improve targeting of inspections.”

Currently, as well as the Single Payment Scheme, CAP schemes are paid out under different computer systems by Defra, the Rural Payments Agency (RPA), Natural England and the Forestry Commission.
