Police in 15 London boroughs are benefitting from using portable fingerprint scanners to verify identities of unconscious or fatal victims as well as suspects while on the road in two minutes. 350 devices, about the size of mobile phones, compare fingerprints with a database on the Police National Computer.

According to Chief Superintendent Adrian Usher, who is in charge of Barnet police: “These devices are likely to save a considerable amount of unnecessary investigation by my officers, who often have to deal with people who try to conceal their identity, and represent another useful weapon in our war on crime.”

Not only can police find out if a person is a suspect but it only ensures that innocent people are eliminated from enquiries.

The devices are being used in Lambeth, Southwark, Newham, Westminster, Lewisham, Tower Hamlets, Brent, Croydon, Islington, Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Barnet.
