New way of approaching government services

Speaking at the Government ICT conference in London earlier this week, Cabinet Office Director for Digital Mike Bracken has said that all public sector organisations need to hasten their adoption of open source and open standards software if they are to meet the government’s aims of digitising services.

There is an entirely new way of approaching how we build government services, but only if they are built on open standards, and open source,” he said.

He gave examples of tools like Hadoop and Solr which were used to create Gov.uk, saying that more IT managers should be using them and said that the UK government should follow in the footsteps of like Intel, Ford and NASA, which have successfully used open source and open standards technologies.
