First Minister from the Welsh government, Carwyn Jones, has announced GBP 39 million in funding for faster broadband connections in schools.

According to Mr Jones: “We want Wales to be a world leader in digital learning, therefore we need to be able to offer our schools fast, consistent and reliable broadband services. This investment will ensure that, by 2014, primary and secondary schools in Wales will have access to safe and secure world-class broadband services needed to deliver a world-class digital education.”

Councils will be given GBP 27 million to upgrade their schools’ internet connections. Primary and special schools will receive GBP 10,000 and secondary schools will receive GBP 20,000 to procure better hardware. This will mean minimum speeds of 10Mbps and 100Mbps for primary and secondary schools respectively. It also means that all schools will have access to an online learning platform called Hwb which was launched by the government last year.
