Digital Wales scheme

Under the new Digital Powys scheme, the first live project of Digital Wales, patients in Powys will soon be able to communicate with doctors via video and phone conferencing. There will also be mobile phone apps which will provide further support to certain patients. For example, patients with conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome will be able to alert support staff if they feel agitated or distressed. There will also be a computer mapping system to help doctors plan treatments more effectively.

The Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths, said that the service is launching in Brecon but that she hopes it goes Wales-wide. Powys Teaching Health Board is heading the scheme, with support from some private companies.

The board’s chair, Mel Evans, said: “This exciting project sees rural health and technology come together to address a range of issues, from patient transport to managing mental health, leading healthy lifestyles and preventing illness.”
