Public sector organisations look to implement BYOD scheme

BYOD schemes

According to a Freedom of Information request, 87% of public sector organisations have no formally implemented bring your own device (BYOD) strategy in place. 41 local and central councils replied to questions from Acronis, a data backup software and disaster recovery company. Only a third of respondents claimed that they would review their BYOD strategy by next year.

Local authorities are further ahead than central government and more advanced with their plans to meet demand to connect smartphones, tablets and devices to their networks. Between 2011 and 2012, roughly 25% of organsiations reported unauthorised devices on the network. The figure was 22% for local authorities, and 29% for central government. However, roughly 25% of local authorities have no efficient way of spotting a connected unauthorised device.

Some councils claim that central government red tape is holding them back from implementing BYOD schemes. The Department for Work and Pensions’ Code of Connection restrictions hold councils back from deploying flexible working plans on equipment that is not government owned, according to Computer Weekly.
