In Chancellor George Osborne’s Autumn Statement, he announced that 12 more UK cities will be sharing GBP 50 million funding for fast broadband services, following a GBP 100 million grant given to 10 UK cities earlier.

The 12 cities are: Brighton and Hove, Cambridge, Coventry, Derby, Oxford, Portsmouth, Salford, York, Newport, Aberdeen, Perth and Londonderry.

Osborne has also set a new deadline for the Broadband Development UK programme, which involves distributing £530m of grants to ensure universal broadband coverage and high-speed access for 90% of premises.

Moreover, the chancellor has confirmed plans to improve mobile phone coverage in rural areas, with a contract expected to be awarded in spring next year.
