DWP launches app to help separated parents

The Department for Work and Pensions launched a web app on Thursday called ‘Sorting out Separation’.

39% of separating parents do not access professional support

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) launched a web app on Thursday called ‘Sorting out Separation’, hosted by leading parenting websites like Mumsnet and National Family Mediation, offering personalised free advice via an ‘innovate and interactive tool’ to the 300,000 families in Britain that undergo separation.

The app forms part of a GBP 20 million fund announced earlier this year to help separating parents. DWP worked closely not only with the Department for Education and Ministry of Justice but also with the voluntary and community sector.

According to the DWP website, “Sorting out Separation is a one-stop-shop for any parent going through a separation. It covers everything from how to avoid a separation to coping with the emotional impact of breaking up, accessing legal or housing support and arranging child maintenance.”

A YouGov poll commissioned by the DWP has shown that 39% of separating parents do not access professional support.

Justine Roberts, CEO and Co-Founder of Mumsnet, said that “the beauty of this new service is that parents thinking of separating won’t need to go to great lengths to seek it out. We’re pleased the Government is using technology cleverly to bring resources to the people who need it.”
