Councils should encourage older people to get online

According the International Longevity Centre - UK, older people could feel less lonely and become more open to learning new skills if they were encouraged to use the internet.

Risk of digital exclusion

According to recent research by the International Longevity Centre – UK, older people could feel less lonely and become more open to learning new skills if they were encouraged to use the internet.

This, coupled with the fact that government and local council services are increasingly being moved online as per the digital by default agenda, means that councils should make sure their older residents are not digitally excluded.

According to Baroness Sally Greengross, the centre’s chief executive: “As more and more private and public services are made available exclusively online, there is a risk of greater exclusion…  digital by default must play a role in nudging those people who are offline towards the internet.”
