GBP 43m datacentre to be built in Leeds

A datacentre called DC4 is set to be built early next year in Leeds to improve internet connectivity and network infrastructure in the region.

Dc4 will be the country’s largest independent datacentre outside London

A datacentre called DC4 is set to be built early next year in Leeds by telecom aql to improve internet connectivity and network infrastructure in the region, following approval by Leeds City Council authorities. It is estimated to be worth GBP 43 million and spread out over 120,000 feet, making it the country’s largest independent datacentre outside London.

According to aql’s founder and chief executive Adam Beaumont, “The new DC4 site will allow expansion room to support the data growth from the IT, media and mobile sectors – including the huge demands which 4G will place on the region’s infrastructure.”

This project will put Leeds, and Yorkshire as a whole, in a very strong position to fulfill their superfast broadband promise,” he added.

The new datacentre is another key milestone for Leeds as we work to make the city a centre of excellence across all aspects of digital technology,” said Lurene Joseph, chief executive of Leeds and Partners, the agency responsible for bringing investment to the city.

It will also be eco-friendly, as heat from the datacentre will be used to heat nearby buildings and green spaces and civic amenities for residents will be built around the site.
