While the UK government had told the European Commission, which has given the green light to the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme, that it would spend GBP 1.5 billion on broadband roll-out, it has currently set out only GBP 530 million for this purpose. This has caused some to be concerned that the remaining money, nearly one billion, may have to be paid by local authorities.
There are also concerns that Scotland, which is to get GBP 100 million of the 530 million, needs to do more to get broadband to its rural areas, and is currently using outdated technology, such as copper wires.
