HM Courts IT director speaks about the courtroom of the future

Paul Shipley spoke of what he believes the courtroom should look like in the future: judges and juries working on tablet computers and usage of virtual case files.

Usage of IT currently installed in courtrooms must increase

In a keynote address at the annual Bond Solon annual witness conference, IT director, HM Courts and Tribunals Service Paul Shipley spoke of what he believes the courtroom should look like in the future: judges and juries working on tablet computers, connected to the internet wirelessly; usage of virtual case files; and results broadcast on Twitter in real-time.

He also hopes that hearings can be scheduled online and data is shared with other government departments, but he feels that this will not be possible in the foreseeable future. There would be many obstacles to overcome, including unwillingness of users and practical problems like lack of main sockets in court buildings.

Shipley told attendees that the Ministry of Justice has urged that the usage of IT currently installed in courtrooms, including video suites in over 300 courts which are meant to reduce cost of transporting defendants to brief hearings, must increase and achieve ‘cashable savings’.
