Conference sheds light on telehealth issues

The Telehealth 2012 conference was held in London on October 30 and 31 where attendees were told that one of the main obstacles coming in the way of citizens in rural areas with long-term conditions making the most of teleheatlh services was poor broadband connectivity. Other issues included the government putting too much effort into pilots and the fact that IT was not given enough importance in the health service.

The Telehealth 2012 conference was held in London on October 30 and 31 where attendees were told that one of the main obstacles coming in the way of citizens in rural areas with long-term conditions making the most of teleheatlh services was poor broadband connectivity. Other issues included the government putting too much effort into pilots and the fact that IT was not given enough importance in the health service.

According to Hazel Price, assistive technology project manager at Kent county council, Kent has very poor broadband and 3G coverage: “We have more dead spots than a collection of cemeteries.”

Dr Paul Shannon, consultant anaesthetist at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS foundation trust, and was reported to have said that “technology was often the responsibility of the finance department within trusts and suggested that a CIO is needed to drive forward technologies, including telehealth.”
