Warwickshire sex ed website for kids criticised

A sex education website and mobile app called Respect Yourself, set up by Warwickshire County Council, NHS Warwickshire and Coventry University and aimed at kids as young as 13, with "sextionary", "pleasure zones", and "no holds barred FAQs" sections, has been criticised by the Family Education Trust and Mothers’ Union, amongst other charities.

“This is a grossly irresponsible website”

A sex education website and mobile app called Respect Yourself, set up by Warwickshire County Council, NHS Warwickshire and Coventry University and aimed at kids as young as 13, with “sextionary”, “pleasure zones”, and “no holds barred FAQs” sections, has been criticised by the Family Education Trust and Mothers’ Union, amongst other charities.

According to Norman Wells, director of the Family Education Trust, “This is a grossly irresponsible website and a complete misuse of taxpayers’ hard-earned cash. Parents throughout the region will be appalled that health professionals have supported the development of a resource that condones sexual experimentation by young people and uses crude and sometimes even foul language.”

However, Amy Danahay, project manager of Respect Yourself, feels differently: “It would be naïve to think that young people are not regularly accessing far more explicit material and if we want to give them access to relevant information, we have to move with the times,” she said.

“It is far better that we provide accurate information for them which is easily accessible and monitored by professionals,” she added.
