"Older people online"
5.4 million over 65s have never used the internet

The government has been urged to do more to help older people become internet savvy when accessing public services online, according to a report by the Policy Exchange.

The report, titled “SimpleThings, Done Well” has advised the government to set up so called “silver sidekicks” to help and advise the elderly on how to make digital transactions. It suggests that the government would save a minimum of £120 million in five years by creating 1,000 paid roles designed to reach 4.5 million of the elderly population.

It was also revealed that despite the efficiency of online public services, 5.4 million over 65s have never used the internet and only 5% own a smartphone.
